Join us for a discussion with the composer to learn about the works programmed that evening, and bring questions of your own to participate in the Q&A. Following the talk enjoy Towson’s four largest ensembles come together to perform a showcase concert of the work of Sonia Morales-Matos.
Sonia Ivette Morales-Matos (b. 1961) is a Puerto Rican composer, performer, and educator who belongs to a family of distinguished musicians. In June 2019, she received recognitions from the City of Santa Ana, the House of Representatives of the United States Congress, and the Mexican Consulate in Santa Ana, CA, for her participation in the “Latino Masters Concert'' as a composer, performer, and educator, and for her contribution to the community of the City of Santa Ana, California, USA. Her music has been performed by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Lumos Orchestra, the Central Ohio Symphony, the Dayton Philharmonic, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Puerto Rico, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, among others. At the present, she is working on a commission for Whistling Hens which will premiere in October 2025.
The COFAC Latin American Arts Festival presents latin american composers, music and artists through out the months of September and October. Featured guests include Cultura Plenera Ensemble, Sonia Ivette Morales-Matos, and Whistling Hens. Events are supported in part by the COFAC Diversity & Inclusion Grant, the New Music Ensemble at Towson University and the Maryland State Arts Council.
