Vacuum science is a critical enabling technology, providing the pristine work environment in which all advanced semiconductor, optical, energy and information devices are developed and produced. The unique properties of thin films make them perfectly suited as a platform for materials science research and the development of next-generation micro-devices. Young professionals wanting to gain access to technology-driven careers need to be aware of the nuances of vacuum processing that impact the creation of nano-structures, their impact on thin film characteristics, and device performance. In this 50-minute presentation, we will review some fundamentals of vacuum science, applications to vacuum system design, and specific examples related to thin film deposition by evaporation and sputtering. Resources for further study of vacuum science will be provided.
