Abstract: Science shapes policy, and policy shapes science - but how does this relationship impact you as a researcher, educator, or student? This talk overviews the federal budget process and explores the critical intersection of scientific research and public policy, including the roles of federal agencies like NASA and the NSF, as well as the White House. We’ll also explore the rise of satellite constellations, the impact this has on astronomy, and the ways in which we can limit activities that harm our ability to observe the cosmos. Additionally, we’ll discuss what the American Astronomical Society does for science and space policy, and how you can get involved and advocate for the scientific community.
