Michael Downs, author and assistant professor in English at Towson University, reads from his new short story collection, The Greatest Show, (The Louisiana State University Press, 2012).
Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Dr. Downs follows the advice of a mentor who told him, "We write from where we get the wound". His books, both set in his hometown, are House of Good Hope: A Promise for a Broken City, which won the River Teeth Literary Nonfiction Prize, and his newest, The Greatest Show: Stories inspired by the historic 1944 Hartford Circus Fire. A recipient of a literary fiction fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, he lives in Baltimore.
