Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Dr. Downs follows the advice of a mentor who told him, "We write from where we get the wound". His books, both set in his hometown, are House of Good Hope: A Promise for a Broken City, which won the River Teeth Literary Nonfiction Prize, and his newest, The Greatest Show: Stories inspired by the historic 1944 Hartford Circus Fire. A recipient of a literary fiction fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, he lives in Baltimore.
